Mayor awards key-to-the-city to activist; Tahir Ali
Worcester, MA 1/2/02: Tahir Ali, a
local Muslim activist, is putting the
final touches on a book that examines the voting
strength of today's Muslim
community.
Mr. Tahir said he hopes the book, "The Muslim
Vote Not Only Counts
ButRecounts," will be published in four months.
Muslims have been a growing influence on the national political scene.
There are now 7 million living in the United States and most of them
traditionally vote Democratic. In the last presidential
election, however, Muslims were urged by their
political leadership to vote for George W. Bush
because of his position on the future of Jerusalem and other matters of
concern to the community.
Political analysts believe Muslims played a big
part in helping Mr.Bush win the White House. It's estimated that 91 percent
of Muslims in Florida cast ballots for Mr. Bush. The Sunshine State put
Mr. Bush over the top.
By the way, Mr. Ali was recently presented the
key to the city by outgoing Worcester Mayor Raymond V. Mariano. In turn,
Mr. Mariano received a plaque from the Islamic Society of Greater Worcester.
Over the years, the mayor and local Muslims have
worked together on a number of projects, including the resettlement of
refugees from Kosovo, relief efforts for victims of the recent earthquake
in Turkey, and the formation of an interfaith group created in the aftermath
of the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks.
"Local Muslims have had a
good working relationship with Mr. Mariano, and we wish him the best,"
said Mr. Ali, who's also a member of the American Muslim Alliance. "He's
really worked hard to make Worcester one family."
